Mariposa Grove Field Trip

Date: Saturday, September 26, 2026
Time: TBD
Location: Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias (meeting spot still TBD)

What to Expect

I’ll add more to this section as we get closer to the date, but as a general overview:

As usual, we’ll start by getting to know each other a little. Then, depending on interest, I will do a quick introduction to nature journaling, and/or a mini-workshop/discussion on a focused aspect of nature journaling. And then we will disperse in small groups or alone, as you wish, to do some nature journaling before returning to share our discoveries (and some snacks).

What to Bring

  • Something to write with and on. I usually have some extra supplies if you forget, or just want to experiment, but any paper plus a pen or pencil will work great! The goal here is to slow down and observe the natural world around us, and put our insights and questions on paper. Although not necessary, having some options for color is also fun – whether that’s watercolor, colored pencils, pastels, or markers.
  • Your own lunch and water for the day.
  • Snacks to share: When we regroup at the end of our time together to share discoveries and observations on the day, it’s nice to have a few snackable items to share while we chat.
  • Clothing layers. By late September, we should be past the peak temps of the year, so you may want a few warmer layers in the morning, but I’m planning for warm and beautiful weather. I’ll try to update this as the date approaches in case Ma Nature throws a curve ball.
  • Sun protection. Always. Consider sun protection such as sunglasses, sunshirts and long pants, sunscreen, and sun hat.
  • Your Curiosity and Wonder. The last thing on the list, but the most important.
