We are in the process of planning a nature journaling field trip to Tuolumne Meadows!
We’ll be getting together on Saturday, July 11, to breathe in the high country summer season and explore all that the area has to offer.
Date: Saturday, July 11, 2026
Time: 10 am to 2 pm
Location: Lembert Dome Picnic Area
What to Expect
I’ll add more to this section as we get closer to the date, but as a general overview:
We’ll start by getting to know each other a little. Then, depending on interest, I will do a quick introduction to nature journaling, and/or a mini-workshop/discussion on a focused aspect of nature journaling. And then we will disperse in small groups or alone, as you wish, to do some nature journaling before returning to share our discoveries (and some snacks).
What to Bring
- Something to write with and on. I usually have some extra supplies if you forget, or just want to experiment, but any paper plus a pen or pencil will work great! The goal here is to slow down and observe the natural world around us, and put our insights and questions on paper. Although not necessary, having some options for color is also fun – whether that’s watercolor, colored pencils, pastels, or markers.
- Your own lunch and water for the day. Because lunchtime falls in the middle of our time out, this will let us stay out longer.
- Snacks to share: However, it’s a delight to share journals and and a few snacks with each other at the end of our time together, so we’ll potluck just that part.
- Clothing layers. As usual in Yosemite, temperatures are likely to vary a lot over the course of the day. Bring some warm layers you can shed as the day warms up.
- Sun protection. The sunshine is particularly powerful at altitude, so be sure to pack sun protection such as sunglasses, sunshirts and long pants, sunscreen, and sun hat.
- Your Curiosity and Wonder. The last thing on the list, but the most important.
Camping?
Having an opportunity to spend the night in Tuolumne is always a treat. Since I don’t have an inside line on campsites, we’ll need to wait until the reservations open at 7 am on May 15, and then get in line with everyone else who is interested in camping. If you are willing to be part of this effort, please let me know so we can coordinate. (Email: [email protected]).
