I’m extra excited about this gathering because it marks the one-year anniversary of this nature journaling group! We met for the first time in El Cap Meadow on September 5, 2024. I remember posting the event in the Daily (since we were allowed to do that back then), and then wondering if anyone would show up. Thank you to everyone who has made this past year of nature journaling so rich and exciting!
September Gathering Details
Date: Wednesday, September 3, 2025
Time: 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Location: El Capitan Meadow – west of El Cap Bridge by the picnic tables
Demo/Journaling Tip: Color-selection by Alison Grove

What to Expect:
Bring:
- Something to write with and on. Something to add some color with can also be fun. I’ll try to have some extra stuff if you forget, but a bit of printer paper and a pen or pencil is also just fine! The goal here is to slow down and observe the natural world around us, and put our insights and questions on paper.
- Clothing layers to be ready for whatever the weather is going to throw at us.
- Something to sit on (optional) – there is a picnic table with benches here, so this may be even less of a desire than some other locations, but if you want to move around, it could still come in handy, though finding a spot on a rock, log, or on the ground is also certainly an option.
- Insect repellent? (also optional) I am much calmer when not being swarmed or bitten by the winged vampires, so I’ll try to have some to share.
- Your Curiosity and Wonder.
Meet Up Outline & Journaling Tip/Show and Tell
I’m so delighted that Alison is willing to share some of her insights about choosing colors for her artwork. One of the things I particularly admire about Alison’s art is how playful and vibrant her paintings are, using bold colors that enhance the landscapes she depicts. If you haven’t seen her work, you can see some of it here.

Our plan will be to catch up, take care of a bit of housekeeping, and then spend a few minutes learning about color selection from Alison.
After that, we’ll all have a chance to do some of our own nature journaling. This will give us an opportunity to try out some bold colors, if so desired. Then at the end, we’ll have a chance to share what we noticed, and any questions or connections that came up, before choosing a location for the next month’s gathering.
We are also in the process of planning a fall field trip to Mono Lake! Stay tuned for more details.
